Il film “This Is Not A Drill – Live from Prague The Movie” per la regia di Sean Evans (distribuito in Italia da Nexo Studios) in formato 8K rimasterizzato e audio HD, è una celebrazione del talento artistico di Rogers Waters che mai e poi mai ci si aspetterebbe da un ultra-ottantenne (persino da uno brillante come lui).

La pellicola nelle sale dal 23 al 30 luglio 2025 è il racconto della parte più politica, sofisticata e cruda dell’universo dei Pink Floyd grazie al resoconto del concerto a Praga del 2023, con il solo difetto di durare forse troppo (oltre due ore e 20 minuti di pellicola) e con quello stile un po’ lamentoso e trascinato tipico di Waters dall’epoca di The Final Cut in avanti.
A fronte di un panorama musicale attuale che manca di significati profondi, Waters invece ne ha sin troppi e non ha paura ad esporsi. Dal supporto alla Palestina per arrivare ad Assange, passando per i diritti civili la tensione politica è sempre presente, sono tematiche che fino a una ventina d’anni fa erano considerate normali nel mondo del rock, ma che ora spiccano, soprattutto se esposte in maniera così limpida e potente. L’impressione però è che lui a questo punto possa permettersi qualsiasi cosa.
Lo show più che un concerto è un’opera multimediale filosofica e sociale, video, testi, foto, raggi laser, accompagnano le canzoni, che sono un unico messaggio di libertà con qualche frecciatina ai suoi ex compagni di band e il racconto di alcuni succolenti aneddoti che faranno contenti i fan di vecchia data. Non manca l’evoluzione degli immancabili gonfiabili a forma di maiale in stile Pink Floyd, diventati ora un drone che veleggia sopra il pubblico.
Annunciato come il suo “primo vero tour d’addio”, lo spettacolo per come lo definisce lui è un “atto di denuncia contro la distopia capitalistica in cui tutti noi lottiamo per sopravvivere ed è dedicato ai nostri fratelli e sorelle di tutto il mondo che sono impegnati nella battaglia esistenziale per l’anima dell’umanità”.
Più che un concerto, lo stile e l’adorazione dei fan sembrano quelli di una setta religiosa o di un raduno di un guru in stile Tony Robbins, ma nel complesso This Is Not A Drill è un prezioso documento che permette ai fan di vedere e ascoltare uno show dal vivo tanto acclamato dalla critica.
Il film include 20 classici dei Pink Floyd e Waters, Us & Them, Comfortably Numb, Wish You Were Here, Is This The Life We Really Want? e il suo inedito The Bar.
Per la produzione, l’artista inglese è stato affiancato sul palco da una band in grado di tener testa ai predecessori: Jonathan Wilson, Dave Kilminster, Jon Carin, Gus Seyffert, Joey Waronker, Robert Walter, Shanay Johnson, Amanda Belair e Seamus Blake.
